Support Refuge In Literacy UK
Ways You Can Support Families
Refuge In Literacy UK is a non-profit organisation, and we warmly welcome authors, illustrators, individuals, and organisations who wish to support families living in domestic violence refuges. One of the most meaningful ways to help is by donating signed copies of books. These signed books offer something personal and lasting for children, young people, and parents.
We are also grateful for new connections with people who wish to stand alongside us. You may choose to raise awareness, introduce us to others, offer practical support, or provide sponsorship. We value every form of gentle, steady support.
If you work in a domestic violence refuge and would like to learn more about our literacy reading prompt resources, please contact us in the first instance.
If You Are a Practitioner or Organisation
We offer training for family practitioners, agencies, and organisations wishing to develop their understanding of literacy prompts and refuge settings. If you would like to receive training or ask for guidance, please contact us by email.
If You Are an Author, Individual, or Publisher
If you are an author, individual, or publisher wishing to donate books, please contact us by email. We can help connect you with local domestic violence refuges so you can donate directly, and, if appropriate, begin a gentle ongoing connection. We can also offer guidance on how best to donate signed copies.

We review how donations are used on a regular basis to ensure we remain responsive to the needs of the families who benefit most from our support. Our literacy reading prompts remain central to our work, and staying connected with domestic violence refuges across the UK is an important part of our mission.
How We Use Donations
- To cover administration costs, such as postage, allowing us to send donated books from publishers to domestic violence refuges.
- To support travel expenses so that we can deliver INSET sessions and training on how to use literacy reading prompts effectively within refuge settings. Training is delivered in collaboration with one of our board directors.
Our Aim for Literacy Support
We aim to offer training to key workers, family practitioners, and professionals supporting families affected by domestic violence — without charging for that support. Our goal is to help build literacy confidence so that families living in refuge accommodation can draw on the same reading strategies being used in specific year groups in school. We want to ensure that children’s education is not paused during their time in refuge.
We also hope to be able to contribute funds to refuges for enriching educational resources such as posters, pictures, or specific equipment that helps create stimulating spaces for children and young people.
